{ PERSONAL STYLE } WHY NOT ME?

As I mentioned in my last MWMM post, I've been having a bit of a moment for country music lately. I've been listening to Midland's album on repeat while I'm working or commuting, and have even started a playlist of country songs. (I know. Honestly, I am as shocked as you are.) There's one song though, that seems to have transcended the genre for me and has made it onto almost every playlist I've made since my trip to Nashville. As you may have guessed from the title of this post, it's called "Why Not Me" and it's by The Judds. (A country classic, but brand new to me.)

For whatever reason, this song has been on my mind constantly. When I was in Idaho visiting my family this August, I would hook up my iPhone to the sound system of my '97 Explorer, roll the windows down and drive along the highway into town absolutely blasting this song, singing to no one in particular and perhaps every guy I've ever met, "Baby, why not me?"

In the song, The Judds (that would be Naomi and Wynonna) sing about waiting "patiently" for a man whose been traveling the world looking for the right woman. He's been searching "from here to Singapore," but hasn't noticed the girl next door. (This country girl's still free!) When I'm in the mood to sink into my feelings about all the guys who have come and gone from my life, all the jobs I interviewed for and never got, or all the times I didn't win the lottery, this song is the perfect companion.

So can I bring this full circle? Let's try. I've been seeing these sweaters with sleeve details all over the place lately. Some with ruffles, some with delicate side ties and some with huge bell-shapes that shrink again dramatically at the sleeve. I'd admire them on Instagram or in store windows and think, "That looks so cute, but it's really not me." You can see where I'm going with this.

A camel sweater for fall is sort of like florals for spring—not exactly groundbreaking. But this one from H&M, with it's chunky weave and fun braid detail sleeves feels like something fresh and special. Rather than passing it up and going for a more typical super-simple crewneck—the safe choice—I said, why not me?

*The sweater seems to be sold out online right now (rude!), but I've seen it in stores all over NYC. And, you can find some similar styles here, here and here.

Indeed, the existential question of, "Why not me?" isn't one I like to dwell on. While, yes, I heart the song so hard and occasionally use it as a soundtrack when I indulge in a solo pity party, I try not to think of myself as a victim of circumstance, or a passive player in my own life. Why not me? Because it wasn't meant to be.

When it comes to clothes on the other hand, I'm trying to answer "Why not me?" with, "Why not me?!" Try the interesting sweater! Wear the jaunty hat! Dare to wear a risky trend! Why not you, honestly?
