{ Zara jacket / Paige jeans / Vince ankle boots (sold out, similar) / J. Crew clutch (old, similar) / Topshop blouse (old, similar) / Celine sunglasses / Baublebar earrings }

Hugh Hefner once said, "Life's too short to be living someone else's dream." Personally, I had no idea that Ye Original Playboy was full of such sage wisdom—did you? I've been marinating on that idea over the few hours since I first googled "Hugh Hefner quotes" out of curiosity. I have to say, Mr. Hefner makes a great point, and as we near the end of 2016, now feels like a great time to take stock of exactly which dreams we are are and aren't living—and for whom.

Mr. Hefner and I seem to share an affinity for velvet smoking jackets, which is a sartorial dream we are both living, and presumably just for ourselves. That seems like a good start to me.

So here I am, on this pretty little tiny street in the West Village (Gay Street if you want to take a peek for yourself), wrapped up in velvet and faux fur and leopard print and giant dark glasses and tassel earrings. This is what my mom would call "a lot of look." I call it "Take me to a holiday party and show me to the champagne!"

For all my talk of loving velvet, I haven't really added that much of it to my wardrobe this season. However, when I saw this belted blazer at Zara, I was immediately smitten. I have been in the market for a blazer that didn't feel stiff and confining—this one definitely wears more like a cardigan or a kimono in its ease and drape. The belt smartens it up and adds a bit of structure, however I can see myself wearing it open too, over all kinds of pretty tops and dresses now as well as into the spring. At just $70, I'm already sure my cost-per-wear will be way low. Plus—how seasonal and extra-festive does it look with this little faux fur stole draped over the lapel?

Flare jeans are something I love coming back to again and again, mostly because they make me feel like my legs are a mile long. This high-waisted pair from Paige Denim (on sale at Nordstrom) is stiff and unforgiving (which I like for certain occasions) while I also have a pair of velvet flares from MiH that feel like pajamas (and they're also currently on sale from Saks). Both pairs are ideal this time of year because they feel a little out of the ordinary, a little more dressy, and you guessed it, festive!

At the start of this post you may have noticed that a lot of what I'm wearing is of the (old, similar) variety. That's the thing about a statement jacket like this or a pair of stand-out earrings—they're so fun and fresh that each has the ability to make so many of the things I already own feel new again. Or at least worth rediscovering. I probably haven't carried this J. Crew bag in over a year, but combined with velvet it takes on a whole new holiday, dressy vibe.
