{ PERSONAL STYLE } TWO WAYS TO WEAR THE COOLEST BLACK DRESS

{ Aritzia dress / Schott NYC jacket / Samantha Wills earrings (old, similar) / Celine sunnies / Steve Madden sandals }

This week I'm packing for a long wedding weekend down in Washington DC to celebrate one of my oldest childhood friends getting married. The festivities start on Thursday and conclude on Sunday, which means I'll need a small army of outfits to get me through it. While I will be relying on a few old standbys (like the navy mini Tibi dress I've had for a couple of years), I wanted to treat myself to a few new pieces to make this mini getaway really feel like an occasion.

The first order of business in that regard was a little black dress. And okay yes duh I already have a few in my closet, but I knew I wanted something that felt like the easy midi I borrowed from Meghan for my friend Andrew's wedding in December. I had a hankering for something that I could slip on with a pair of heels and feel dressed up—then switch into my Stan Smiths and feel cool and breezy for a summer work day. I settled on the 'Vance' dress by Babaton (a house line at Aritzia). The mock neck is ultra-conservative, but two side slits give it plenty of movement and just a little sex appeal. At $165 this dress straddles the line between an splurge and an investment in my freelance writer's lifestyle, but once I tried it on and realized how many ways I could wear it, I knew the purchase would be worthwhile. True to form I had every intention of saving it for the wedding weekend to debut... But sometime in mid-March I was in the throws of a date-induced wardrobe panic so I broke it out early. Needless to say I got right on that slippery slope and have worn it more times than I can count in the last few weeks for everything from long days at the office to late nights out in Brooklyn. (Nothing a quick dry cleaning can't undo, right?)

Now you'll have to excuse me, I'm off to figure out how to fit multiple pairs of heels, a black tie gown, pajamas, party dresses and everything else into a weekend bag... [Insert emoji of the face with the huge eyeballs and red cheeks like eight or nine times.]
