I know it's really boring to talk about the weather over and over—here in New York it's one of our favorite things to complain about, no matter the season. But this is January, folks. Temperatures have been rollercoaster-ing between the 20s and the 60s, leaving most of us in a perpetual state of, "I honestly have no idea what to wear." For me, that means I end up wearing the same pair of ripped Gap jeans, Chuck Taylor's and a sweater pretty much daily.

However—I think I owe it to you guys and to myself to attempt to get out of that uniform every once and a while. Traditionally I'm not huge on dresses in winter, mostly because I've never loved tights all that much. But since the lovely people over at DKNY and Donna Karan sent me some fresh hosiery for the season, I've been more inspired to give my jeans a few days off. Their tights and socks hold on without squeezing and as I've discovered, layer up quite nicely.

I picked up this Scotch & Soda dress on sale from Shopbop in November (you can find it here), and have found that it's a great answer to my winter dress woes. It's nice and loose and the print is not too abrasive for the time of year when I want to keep most of my outfits on the darker side of the spectrum. (You can shop more printed mini dresses here.)

The necklaces are a vintage jumble I put together when I was last home, composed of unused gold chains, gold charms from my mom's days at Nordstrom and a monogrammed brooch (also my mom's) from the 1960s. (See it in more detail here.)

I've had these Sole Society suede boots for a few seasons now, and I don't wear them nearly as often as I should. They sag around the ankles a little more than I'd like, but until I can afford to splurge on a pair of Stuart Weitzman OTK boots, these will do—and they stay up much better when I've layered a pair of cozy sweater tights and equally cozy knit knee socks underneath. (Both are DKNY.) This layered socks and tights look is a little bit out of my wheelhouse, but if I want to wear dresses in January, I better get used to it. (Shop more killer over-the-knee boots here.)

This trusty Gigi New York 'Madison' crossbody bag has become and absolutely indispensable part of my year-round wardrobe. (It has probably been in half a doze blog posts prior to this, honestly.) The navy pebbled leather works in any season, and the boxy shape allows it to fit my wallet, keys, a sunglasses case and lipstick and a box of Altoids if I want. It serves as the perfect travel handbag (fits right into my Madewell Transport tote-as-carry-on), as well as a going-out, concert, date and brunch bag. Really, it's that good!

It's hard to say if I'm a convert to the winter dress just yet, but I'm glad to know I can get outside my comfort zone just a little bit during the season when all anyone can think of is comfort.
