{ Ecote Surplus Jacket (old, similar) / Joe Fresh silk tee / Banana Republic lace skirt / Adidas Stan Smith sneakers / Custom Wink & Winn bag (c/o) / J. Crew necklace / Proof 'Hayburn' shades (c/o)}

One of the most fantastic things about getting older (one must focus on the positives) is the great sense of self that seems to slowly permeate your life—helping you weed out bad friends, unhealthy habits and most recently for me, superfluous clothes. I forced myself to do a huge closet purge this winter (inspired by the KonMari method) and say goodbye to a lot of things that no longer felt like "me."

Of course it might be just a phase, but I've realized that I am happiest and feel the most confident in a paired-back color palette (black, white and navy blue, it seems) and a wardrobe that facilitates outfits like this: unfussy, slightly-tomboyish-but-pretty and versatile enough for almost anything my daily life entails.

Loose tops, tight jeans, pretty skirts/dresses and flat shoes now make up about 70 percent of my wardrobe. I have nailed down the silhouettes that work best for me and go figure, just about everything I own now can be worn together—meaning my pairing options are plentiful, packing for trips is way more simple and selecting something out of my tiny closet each day that I actually like feels a bit easier. And boy do I love easy these days.

On top of this quickly-forming uniform, I keep the rotation fresh with cool accessories, jackets, kimonos and bags that pack a punch. So on that note, what we have here is really just one example of how I've been remixing my favorite staples lately and have made getting dressed still feel fun (and not insanely repetitive and boring) thanks to some key extras.

I worked with (the seemingly now defunct) Wink & Winn to create this custom satchel bag last year, and I can't even tell you how much use I get out of it. (Very similar to this Michael Kors bag but doesn't have the handy shoulder strap.) It's really hard to resist the appeal of a crisp white bag, isn't it? Keeping the leather clean is another thing, but I've found that a damp washcloth or gently rubbing it with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser usually does the trick.

Also now apparently unavailable is this Ecote surplus jacket from Urban Outfitters. I think I bought it in 2009, and again, so much wear. These jackets were so trendy at the time, but I still find myself reaching for it all these years later. You can tell that it's totally sunbleached now, which I love, but I think I'm ready for an update—one with a slightly longer silhouette and perhaps a more luxe fabrication. (Help?)

As I mentioned my most recent style posts, I am having a real moment for the newly revamped offerings at Banana Republic. I scooped up this sweet little lace mini on super sale last week and am already kind of obsessed. It's short enough for a date night and just long enough for the office, especially if you pair it with cool sneakers (currently it doesn't get cooler than a retro pair of Stan Smiths) and a more conservative top. This little silk tee from Joe Fresh (also on sale for an absolute steal) would be exactly that if it wasn't just a tad too sheer...

Can we also collectively just have a moment for how lovely it is to have lush green leaves on the trees again? I know this happened a while ago, but it feels like I blinked and suddenly the city has come back to life. Tompkins Square Park is practically bursting with flowers and greenery now, and I've found myself taking walking detours when I'm cruising around Avenues A and B just so I can take it in before I blink again and it's 98 degrees with 96 percent humidity and I'd rather be gazing up at the AC unit in my dark, lonely room than all these gorgeous trees. Sad, but true!
