It was pretty apparent from the FW14 runways that ponchos are going to try really hard to be a thing this season. We saw them at Burberry (as above) during London Fashion week, and at Tommy Hilfiger, BCBGMAXAZRIA, DKNY and Zero+Maria Cornejo in New York. (For proof, check out my NYFW trend report.)

Western-inspired was a huge overarching trend for the season, and while cowboy boots and fringe feel a bit far-fetched for New York City life, the poncho is something I can actually get on board with. I think. As exhibited above, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (as well as Olivia Palermo and Cara Delevingne, via Vogue) make this almost costume-y outerwear look quite chic. It's all about how you style it—and keeping the rest of your look simple and sophisticated is key. Over-the-knee boots, dark denim and a sleek wide-brim hat nod to the Wild West influence without overdoing it. As a girl from Washington who spends time in Idaho, you know I love an outfit like this

Can I afford the coveted Burberry poncho? Certainly not. However, I'd bet my lunch money that Zara and H&M will have some budget-friendly options for us by October. Frankly, anything that allows me to leave the house basically wearing a blanket and still feeling stylish is a win in my book.
Will you rock a poncho this fall, or leave it to RHW in the wintertime in Sydney, Australia to pull off this trend?

  1. I love a poncho for fall and I love her style it feels natural not forced.

  2. I'd be all over this if it wasn't so damn expensive! x
