{STYLING NOTES} 5 IN-FLIGHT FAVORITES FOR SITTING IN COACH...

flying coach

By the time you're reading this, I'll already be en route to Seattle, a direct flight I've come to know well. And though I sometimes doubted I'd ever get there, I've finally become a pretty savvy flier, at the ripe old age of 28. I know what to wear, how to pack, and value of choosing the aisle seat over the window.

Now that I'm such an expert, I figured I'd share my easy formula for traveling in style and comfort in the summer. We all know that leggings and a cashmere sweater does the trick the rest of the year, but here's how I fly in the heat of July:

1. Slip-on sneakers are a flyer's best friend. Listen, I don't want to see your toes at the airport. And I also don't want to hassle with laces, buckles and what not when I go through security. That's why I opt for my classic Vans checkerboard kicks. They're easy to slip on and off (obviously) and comfortable enough to leave on during a six-hour flight.

2. Knit maxi dress + pashmina = the leggings of summer. This spring, I picked up the most glorious knit maxi dress from Madewell that hits just above the ankles. It has an easy crew neck and muscle tee styling, and the fabric is soft and stretchy. Unfortunately, the dress has since sold out, but I found great alternatives from Madewell (here) and Acne (here). Also, I never fly without a pashmina or scarf, because it doubles as a blanket and a pillow for long, chilly flights.

3. Aviator sunglasses because thematic. Always Ray-Ban, always perfect.

4. A structured black tote makes any travel outfit 10x more chic. It just does. An oversized black leather bag can hide what a sloppy traveler you actually are, and conceal one of those embarrassing neck pillows (if you're that kind of person). I found this overize Rebecca Minkoff MAB tote at a sample sale this year, and can't sing it's praises enough. The handles are long enough to slide it over my shoulder, and it's roomy enough for my laptop, headphones, scarf, book, and all the in-flight snacks I could ever need. (It's not quite as discreet, but the blue version is marked down for Nordstrom's Anniversary sale!)

5. Over-ear headphones are a must. Let's be real: earbuds are fine for commuting, but they really start to hurt after a few hours. For blocking out crying babies and chatty neighbors (and watching three in-flight movies in row) there's nothing better. I have these Jabra Revo wireless headphones that are so comfortable and convenient, but can't deny that the black and irredescent 'Taylor' headphones from Frends are incredibly chic. (And if there are no in-flight movies, might I direct you to this nice playlist?)

What are your in-flight essentials?

  1. I have this bag and it's seriously my everything! I usually don't wear it with casual stuff, but I love the way you styled it!
