coat check...

Working in retail is hard. Not in the way that it is a difficult job, but it is difficult to spend hours on end in a sea of great clothes. Such is the case at Anthropologie, but also add in lamps and dishes and drawer pulls that I've begun to see as vital to my life.

Drawer pulls and doorknobs aside, there is one thing that has been grabbing my attention more than anything else: coats.

There are a few things that make a great fall/winter coat, no matter the style or color: quality fabric that keeps you warm, details that make it worth the price, a fit that just won't quit, and pockets.

I want to build an exquisite wardrobe of coats and jackets for every occasion. Blair Waldorf has one, shouldn't I?

I think so.

$348.00 at Anthropologie - "Little Red Riding Hood, you sure are lookin' good, you're everything, a big bad wolf could want..." That's what this coat by Madchen makes me think of: a grown up, glammed up storybook character. They call it the Firehouse Jacket though, and that works too. It's bold, it's bright, and I love it.

$128.00 by Silence & Noise at Urban Outfitters - I know I'm totally late on the bandwagon, but I still don't have a moto jacket. Now that I'm part of the Urban, Inc. family, I think I'm going to enjoy the benefits of that relationship, and choose this one. Perfect over a little dress for a night out, or with a t-shirt and jeans, for anytime. I think this jacket tops my 'must-have' list.

$348.00, Mise en Scene by Ruffian, at Anthropologie - Fancy, simple, swingy, black. This is the coat you wear to a fabulous party, over your very favorite little party dress, with tights and killer shoes. Maybe throw on a great cashmere scarf as well.

$168.00 by Silence & Noise at Urban Outfitters - I love this faux fur coat. Is this look hard to pull off in Seattle? Perhaps. Do I care? Not particularly. I want this one to wear just like the UO model, over a little frock, out on a saucy date or to a holiday party.

$249.00 by The North Face at Nordstrom - Tailgates. Long walks. Errands. Skiing. Shopping. Going to the movies. Ice skating. Those are just a few of the places I would (and do) wear a high quality, super-warm down jacket. The hood is an all-weather bonus, and I prefer the no-nonsense classic shape of this puffer. The North Face was a status brand in high school (remember, this is Seattle), but I still love it now because their jackets, vests and fleeces really do keep me warm and dry when I need them to.

$690.00 by Gryphon at shopbop.com - Uhm, I don't have to justify everything in my fantasy exquisite wardrobe of jackets...

$198.00 at GUESS - This practical black wool coat is definitely a jacket wardrobe essential. It's casual enough to wear everyday, and the toggles and exaggerated collar give it added interest and character. Warm, black, classic, and not super-expensive; a win all around.

$268.00 at J.Crew - I love ruffles and I love dark grey. J. Crew manages to combine a classic silhouette with feminine and fresh details that make this coat both practical and whimsical.

Oh, and also these...

Marc by Marc, American Eagle, Boy by Band of Outsiders, Juicy Couture, Alice + Olivia, LaROK, Paul & Joe, Leifsdottir and Issabella Oliver.
